As a parent I feel that it our job to teach our children the core values and social skills that we wish for them to have. Of course the best way to teach is to lead by example, but sometimes children learn better through stories and pictures.
The book series, “Books of Responsibility” from Young People’s Press are beautiful story books that span a wide range of ages. Each book contains a collection of stories from around the word relating to the topic of the book. The books help children establish a rich foundation of social-emotional development and learn habits of good character such as sharing, patience, fairness and more. These books are like little pieces of literature with gorgeous, vibrant artwork throughout. The stories also emphasize diversity as the lessons and stories are adapted from cultures around the world.
The collection is appropriate for reading levels grades 2 – 5, but the books also serve as excellent storybooks for toddlers who are learning their social skills and pre-schoolers, kindergarteners and first graders who are adapting to the nature of new classroom environments and demands for the first time. There are 16 fantastic books that make up the “Books of Responsibility” collection:
•Stories of Cooperation •Stories of Courage •Stories of Excellence •Stories of Fairness
•Stories of Forgiveness •Stories of Friendship •Stories of Hard Work •Stories of Helpfulness
•Stories of Kindness •Stories of Loyalty •Stories of Patience •Stories of Peacefulness
•Stories of Respect •Stories of Sharing •Stories of Truthfulness •Stories of Wisdom
These books are used in hundreds of schools across the country to teach character education and up until now have only been available directly to teachers and schools. Now they are now available directly to parents for the first time!
We were sent 6 of the “Books of Responsibility” to review. And they couldn’t have come at a better time…our little kindergartener is having some issues that these stories will help get our points across! We received “Stories of Sharing”, “Stories of Fairness”, “Stories of Helpfulness”, “Stories of Courage”, “Stories of Patience”, and “Stories of Peacefulness”.
The “Books of Responsibility” arrived and I don’t know who was more excited, Landon or me! All of the books are hardcover and I feel that’s important because I know that these are high quality books that will stand the test of my four kids!
Each book contains several stories from around the world and is illustrated beautifully. I love that at the beginning of each story we learn what part of the world the story originates from; not only are my children learning how to be patient and fair, but they are becoming aware of other cultures as well!
And while the reading level is a bit above where Landon is at right now, they are easy stories to listen to and I know that in a year or two he will be reading them to me! Of course his favorite story is “The Elephant and the Ant”!
We haven’t gotten to all the stories yet, but a favorite of mine, and one that is particularly relevant to Landon and Keeley right now is “To Fight or Not to Fight”.
