Angry Birds Rice Krispie Treat Pops

Landon turns 6 on Thursday and gets to bring treats in to his kindergarten class. I knew I wanted to make something Angry Birds because that is the theme of his party this year. Since this is my first time bringing in snacks for the class I wanted to do something that I felt was probably pretty safe for everyone to eat (I don’t know if anyone in the class has food allergies), so I decided on making some Angry Birds Rice Krispie Treat Pops.

The Angry Birds Rice Krispie Treat Pops were really easy to make. Here’s what you’ll need:

1 box of Rice Krispie cereal (any rice cereal)

1 package of mini marshmallows

butter or margarine

frosting

craft sticks (popsicle sticks)

starburst candies

food coloring

black frosting pen or black gel frosting

wax paper

circle cookie cutter, or glass

First you need to make the Rice Krispie treats like normal:

1. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter or margarine in a large skillet

Once it is melted, slowly add 4 cups of mini marshmallows

Once the marshmallows are melted remove skillet from heat and slowly add in 6 cups of Rice Krispie cereal

Mix the cereal and marshmallow / butter mix. I recommend buttering your spoon first, otherwise everything will start sticking to your spoon!

After all of the cereal is sticky from the marshmallow / butter mixture pour into pan coated with butter or cooking spray (so the treats don’t stick). Flatten and smooth out with buttered spoon.

Let the treats cool for a few minutes. During that time, lay out some wax paper on your counter, and get your circle cutter ready (either cookie cutter, or you can use a glass like I did). Then cut out circles using your circle cutter

Place the circle cutouts on the wax paper. Note: you may have to reshape a bit if they got misshaped while getting out of glass or cookie cutter.

Next insert popsicle sticks into the treats. Again, you may have to reshape a bit after getting the stick in.

Once you have your sticks in, let the treats cool completely. During this time you can color your frosting. I chose to do red and blue. Simply put the food coloring into your container of frosting and mix with a knife.

Cut mini marshmallows in half for the eyes, and cut yellow and orange starburst candies in half (diagonally so you get two triangles). Frost the treat with the back of a spoon and then place on the marshmallow eyes and triangle starburst beak.

And finally use the black frosting pen or gel frosting tube to make two dots on the eyes for the pupils and two diagonal lines for the eyebrows.
